There were a few of these lovely birds flitting about at great speed. I would have liked to get a shot wirh a better background but they were digging burrows in the loose sand on a building site and it was far from picturesque. So this had to do.
Taken at Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island.

This is a young Carpet Snake (Python) about 4 ft long. It has been waiting in this spot in one of our Gravillea trees, quite close to the ground and has hardly moved for three days. Just waiting for it's next meal to come along. Make a nice poster for a boy's bedroom. Or a girl's?

I used two neutral density filters to give a longer exposure. I was hoping to blur all the people that were moving, but the angle of momentum resulted in only the ones nearest the camera being affected. Not sure how to get around this problem. Maybe use a telephoto?

The parent Butcher Birds are flat-out feeding their 3 youngsters. The babies' squawking for food is only broken by short naps and nightfall. The female does most of the work (of course) and always feeds the babies before feeding herself. The male is more of a pragmatist and reckons he should feed himself first (to keep his strength up in case he needs to defend the others).

This caterpillar (of the Orchard Swallowtail butterfly) rears-up when provoked and distends these two red horns, called osmeterium. From these horns it releases a powerful and pungent scent; a concentrated product from the sap of the citrus tree on which it has been feeding.

These delicate flowers close-up during the day and start opening at dusk. They rely on night insects, such as moths, to polinate them. The ones that are this purple/mauve colour have a halo of ultra-violet in the air around the petals. At first I thought it was just my eyesight playing tricks, but when I point it out, others can see it too. Not so easy to photograph however.

About 1cm in body length, this bug plunged its "dagger" into my hand while I was weeding in the garden. I think it used its probosis but it felt very much like a wasp sting.
No adverse reactions, fortunately, just a small blood-blister.

I have changed the background of this photo to solid red as the original background was a cluttered view of building facades etc. I like the effect of the red and black contrast.
